SOCIAL
- Fair For Life accredited and require all sourcing partners to Fairtrade, Fair for Life, BSCI and/or WIETA accredited.
- We support our partners to implement, maintain & improve social standards to adhere to local regulations and international standards.
- Fairtrade and Fair for Life premiums : payout of + R3 million to workers trusts for their upliftment during the past 12 months
- Full time Social Worker work with 30 families, from early childhood intervention to caring for the frail; incl. interactions with BADISA, Pebbles, Stellenbosch University.
- Proud supporter of Aware.org and promote responsible alcohol consumption.
ENVIRONMENTAL
- All our vineyards are IPW certified
- 80 ha are certified Organic & the rest is farmed using biological, sustainable methods.
- Low disease pressure and mainly dry-land farming, leaves a low carbon footprint - and Leeuwenkuil are certified CARBON HEROES
- Winery designed for optimal respect, reducing water and electricity use by 50% - solar panels, proper isolation and decreasing product movement reduce the environmental impact. Waste is massively reduced by replacing perlite filters with modern Xflows.
- On the Food Safety side, we are FSSC22000 certified, and we adhere to international standards.
ECONOMIC
- As a family-owned and farm-based business, we understand the value chain and our responsibility to maintain it.
- We run a lean and smart operation. An experienced team manage cost & react quickly to changing business environment due to short-chain decision making.
- Clients remain key to our success. We foster trust to supply wine with integrity & consistency, in turn we trust them to offer fair pricing.
- Product traceability is key. An excellent management system allows full traceability of every bottle of wine from farm to client.
FAIR FOR LIFE
Fairtrade and Fair for Life premiums are managed by a workers ‘premium committee’ who agree on specific projects where funds are to be used:
- School clothing & stationery
- Children’s sports cloths and equipment
- Household furniture & appliances
- Medical needs like eye tests & glasses
- Driver’s license training program
FULL-TIME SOCIAL WORKER
Leeuwenkuil employees a full time ‘Social Worker’, who together with Leeuwenkuil’s management team & generous client contributions, supports more than 30 farmworker families, from early childhood intervention to caring for the elderly & frail; (incl. co-labs. with BADISA, Pebbles, Stellenbosch University).
Some of our projects include:
- Women’s month empowerment program & training
- Elderly care, life-skill training & hand-craft projects
- Daycare/ after school care & Leeuwenkuil Creche
- Agri-worker of year & other awards functions
- Santas Shoebox Christmas project for the children
- Various training programs incl. life-skills, substance abuse, gender-based violence etc.
